Texas Strong

This Emmy-winning verité documentary tracks Kai Shappley and her mom as they fight their conservative Texas  town to let Kai use the girls bathroom. Kai is transgender, and Texas had just passed a bill that made it a crime to use a bathroom that doesn’t match the sex assigned at birth. The film won an Emmy, two Webbys, and was included in the documentary shorts program at SXSW Film Festival.

The film was first published by Condé Naste’s them. as part of Trans in America, a series of three documentary shorts that the ACLU produced in collaboration with filmmaker Lindsey Dryden. Each film was directed by an LGBTQ+ filmmaker, produced by an inclusive and majority-LGBTQ+ production team, and informed by a panel of transgender advisers.
